(CAJLE)

2004 Annual Conference

The “Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education” (CAJLE) is a nationwide non-profit organization which provides a forum for teachers of Japanese at all instructional levels. Our main objectives are: (1) to exchange information and views on teaching and learning of Japanese, (2) to provide professional training to Japanese language teachers, and (3) to encourage research and other activities for advancement of Japanese language education.

As part of our major activities, CAJLE will hold its 2004 Annual Conference from Aug.19-22, 2004. Although most parts of the conference will be held in Japanese, we will hold one session of our seminars/workshops in English. The conference schedule is as follows:

     Day 2 (Friday, August 20)

2:00--5:00 Seminar/Workshop (2)
“Ezoe Methods: Practice on the Teaching of Japanese Grammar and Introduction to Visual Materials”
Lecturer: Takahide Ezoe (Shinjuku Japanese Language School, Japan)

5:15--6:15 Annual Business Meeting (Members only)

7:00--9:00 Dinner Banquet at Chinese Restaurant 

     Day 3 (Saturday, August 21)

9:00--2:00 Seminar/Workshop (3)  [held in ENGLISH]
“Activities and Strategies for Programs of Japanese Language and Culture”
Through this hands-on session, participants will gain knowledge and understanding of the Japanese language and culture by reviewing the up-to-date resources, and also discussing how to design your courses and classes. 
Lecturer: Yoko Udagawa (Japan Foundation, currently posted at Alberta Learning, Canada)

12:00--2:00 Lunch Break (Teaching materials for sale, Informal discussions, Reports from the working groups in Toronto)

2:00--5:00 Seminar/Workshop (4)
 “Critical Thinking Skills in the Teaching and Learning of Japanese”
Lecturer: Hiroko Kataoka (California State University, Long Beach, U.S.A)

5:00--5:15 Closing Address

    Day 4 (Sunday, August 22)

Optional One-Day Excursion to the Niagara Falls Area (9:00-5:30 approx.)

We will visit Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and a regional winery with a private coach and a guide. Interactive, informative, and fun!


Participation Fees:  Members: CDN$20.00 per day; Non-members: CDN$30.00 per day
($5 discount for 2 days; $10 discount for 3 days). Half-day fee will be applied to participants in the seminar/ workshop (3) in English for non-native speakers of Japanese only.

Lunch:  Japanese boxed lunches can be reserved (CDN$10.00 each). Please place your order in advance.

Dinner Banquet:  At a Chinese restaurant, on August 20 (CDN$23.00)

One-Day Excursion:  On August 22 (CDN$75, lunch is not included)
